DAY OF ATONEMENT
LESSON FOR THE JUNIOR CLASSES
STUDY SCRIPTURE:
entLEVITICUS 16: 1-19
Key Verse
“So he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel and because of their transgressions, for all their sins”.
Leviticus 16: 16
INTRODUCTION
God has a nature which we can describe as one of holiness, righteousness, justice, love, caring, compassion and pity for those that are unlike Him.
He knows that the human beings He created are like children in a kindergarten school and so He has to be patient with them when He calls them into His family. Their foreparents Adam and Eve slipped up badly and sin caused unrighteousness and all kinds of human suffering and pain. But God is patient and we know this part of His nature which we call longsuffering. To get people who believed in God and later in the Lord Jesus as their Saviour God created a system of worship with a Tabernacle and a Mercy Seat in a specially reserved part of the Tabernacle into which the head of the priesthood (who were worship leaders and head of spiritual affairs established by God) would enter once a year on the Day of Atonement with the blood of burnt offering sacrifices made and with sweet incense which this High Priest would then offer to God so He would forgive the sins of the people for one year. This offering on the Day of Atonement would “cover” over sins for only one year.
The people of Israel had to do this with sacrifices, special prayers, fasting, and making penitence expressing deep sorrow for their sins they had done over and over again until the true High Priest would come and offer His pure and perfect life and so atone for the sins of the nation and the sins of all those who accepted Him as their Saviour and Redeemer. Once the Lord Jesus Christ came as the Lamb who blood was shed on the cross, the people of God did not have to have a Day of Atonement, have a high priest who could only approach God once a year and ask God to forgive the sins of the people, and have special prayers and fasting. Believers could now boldly approach God at any time of the day or night to worship Him, pray to Him, and ask for forgiveness of their sins. They did not have to carry around a load of sins and wait for a special day to come to God.
But human beings being so weak and prone to sinning had to be disciplined by that system of the Tabernacle, the priesthood, the High Priests, the many many burnt offerings and other sacrifices so that they look forward to the coming of the Messiah.
So we thank God for His kindness, His wisdom, and His mercy. We should love Him just as He loved us.
